World’s Largest Passenger Ship, Oasis of the Seas To Be Completed This Year
When you first saw this, about ten years ago, you probably said it won’t ever become a reality. Well, you will be proven wrong as the Oasis of the Seas concept will see daylight this year and it will become a floating city with a population of 6,300 inhabitants. The Oasis of the Seas is a 18-story tall super-boat with plenty of outdoor space including a tree-filled park, and world’s largest on-board swimming pool. 500 tons of water are needed to fill the swimming pool while 400 tons of soil and plants are needed to fill the park.
In order to build the Oasis of the Seas, the constructors used 724 hollow 66-ton steel blocks for the deck, 2,800 people to work at its design and construction, and $1.2 billion. This ship will become the biggest passenger ship, and it will also claim other world records like the first at-sea park, the biggest at-sea swimming pool, and it will be the ship with the most rooms with balconies.
All of these world’s records will be achieved thanks to the design of the ship which is unique and revolutionary. The designers decided to widen the hull and split the boat in half, then to build two six-story structures on each side. These will be the passengers’ rooms while the space in the middle was used to fit the tree-filled park.
“Ten years ago, we felt that 140,000 tons was as big as we could go. Now that we’ve got the experience, we’ve taken a quantum leap,” said Harri Kulovaara, the designer of the Oasis of the Seas.
The floating city will be maneuvered thanks to three 20-foot tall propellers mounted on swiveling pods, and using electric motors. This combo-system will deliver about 30,000 horsepower, and it’s very efficient. As a bonus, the propellers are allowed to rotate 360 degrees therefore they will be used as a steering system.
